Creating Traditions For Your Family At The Dinner Table This Thanksgiving

Remember when you were young and all of your family would gather at Grandma’s house on Thanksgiving where the most delicious foods would be prepared and conversations at the dinner table that evening seemed to go on forever?  Now that you are all grown up, it’s time to start traditions of your own that you can pass on to your children and they can pass them on to theirs.  Of course, you can always keep the secret Thanksgiving receipes that your grandmother passed down to you, but you can also add your own favorite receipes to make a traditional holiday meal your own.

When deciding what to serve at your upcoming holiday party, think simple but delicious.  Take out your cookbook and some of your family’s favorite Thanksgiving receipes.  Look them over carefully to see if you can add any special, secret ingredients to give it a new flair and a different twist to an old, traditional meal.  Just by adding something new to your receipe, it will give your dish a delectable new flavor.

Thanksgiving receipes for vegetable dishes have come a long way since the days of canned peas or frozen corn.  Why not wow your guests with a delicious vegetable dish of glazed carrots.  They are sweet and slightly crisp and a far cry from the old vegetables that your Grandma used to make.

·         4 medium carrots

·         2 tablespoons butter

·         2 tablespoons sugar

·         mint or thyme, optional

Preparation:

Wash and peel carrots. Cook in boiling salted water until tender. Drain. Cut in diagonal slices. Melt the butter then add sugar. Add carrots. Cook until slightly browned and glazed. Add a teaspoon of chopped fresh mint leaves or thyme to the butter and sugar mixture, if desired.

Instead of you being the only one to choose all of the Thanksgiving receipes to serve your family and friends this year, why not try asking each member of your family to tell you one item that they would love to see on the dinner table this holiday season.  When preparing the dish, have the person who chose that particular receipe help you prepare it.  It will give them a feeling of involvement in making this special dish and they will feel a sense of accomplishment that they were able to have a small part in making a very memorable Thanksgiving holiday.  It could easily become a tradition that occurs every year….Grandma would be proud.
